Data Visualization - Power BI Competition

In my Fall 2017 semester, I took Data Visualization. For the final group project in that class, we were tasked with selecting a location in the United States that tech companies are looking to locate to. From there, our group would find data sets to create an argument for why a company should move there. After presenting to the professor, three groups from all the sections were selected to participate in the competition. One additional group outside the class would also be selected to participate. The top three placements receive a cash prize: 1st gets $3000, 2nd gets $1500, and 3rd gets $500 (awarded to the group, so split among the group members). The judge and sponsor was a representative from Power BI!

Our group chose Atlanta, Georgia as our location. Much to the professor's dismay, no one picked Dallas, Texas as everyone thought it would be too obvious of a choice with lots of groups picking it.

For our data, we chose airport traffic, cost of living with median rent and housing price, bachelor's degree concentrations, and commuter transportation. With these factors in mind, we found various data sets and worked with them through various visualization tools such as ggplot2 in R Studio, Power BI, and d3 (web-based visualizations).

My group ended up getting 2nd place at the competition! We were all super proud, and it took a lot of hard work to make it look as nice as it is! Despite our efforts, 1st place did go above and beyond with an interactive website, so kudos to them!

Overall it was a great experience! We got to test our visualization skills (as well as the skills that lead up to it like data cleansing and formatting), and got to show them off in a competitive environment with high stakes! It was a tremendously helpful learning experience, and one that I'm proud of! Hands-on experience like this is invaluable, and it's great to get opportunities like this!

Information Systems Capstone - Final Version

It's been quite the endeavor finishing this project. The 10,000 word report, dashboard, user manual, and presentation took a lot of effort to put together, but it was well worth it in the end. Our professor complimented our work, stating we were one of the top performers of the class resulting in an A in the class. It was unfortunate, however, that none of the Microsoft representatives were able to attend our presentation, much to the disappointment and apologies of our professor. Despite this, the class overall was a fantastic learning experience, requiring the 7 of us to collaborate heavily throughout the semester. Introduction

Hello there! My name is Nicholas Orton (also known as Nick), and this is my ITSS blog detailing some experiences and stuff I've worked on during my time at UTD! I'm currently pursuing my bachelor's degree in ITSS, and plan on graduating in the Spring of 2018 (this semester)! Hopefully this will give some insight on some of the work and such I've done that can't be properly conveyed in a resume.
